Communication
While watching this show without volume I found it very difficult to keep my attention. All of the characters seemed to have a close relationship with each other and were able to use their facial expressions to communicate with each other. There was a particular scene that stood out to me...one character (woman) seemed to have a stern look on her face while talking and looking towards another character (male). This scene was the only one where the characters did not seem to have a positive interaction.
My assumption of that specific scene was off - the woman was not upset at the man at all, in fact she was interested in him. Being able to listen to the interactions helped with my understanding of the characters. The dark haired girl is very sarcastic and seems to take everything as a joke, whereas, the blonde girl was more practical. Her sarcastic jokes might hinder some of the relationships in the long run.

It was interesting that you saw her facial expressions and thought she was upset with the man when in fact it was the opposite. Communication is a combination of verbal and non verbal cues, fun experiment though.

I can totally imagine the challenge in discerning sarcasm from anger/frustrating/feeling upset, when you do not have the benefit of hearing the person talk. Sarcasm is something that is so based on the tone of voice being used along with the words being said, and the relationship between the people. Seems like a good reminder that when we cannot hear what is being said, we are missing out on certain information that could help us understand the reality of a situation.
ReplyDeleteI find the assumptions we make just by the look on ones face very interesting. It just goes to show the importance of communication and how the different forms are used in our everyday lives. Great blog.
ReplyDeleteI find looking at one's face and trying to figure out what's being said can be challenging and confusing. But, noticing the sarcasm with the words being said we are missing the bigger picture. What we take for granted people who cannot hear I know how they feel. Figuring out what is being said by the expressions on one's face can be totally different once you can hear the conversation.
